We've jumped into a busy second semester for the Media Center, and we're loving it! The library has hosted many guest speakers & events recently, including a former Bayside student who spoke to health sciences students, a professional speaker who addressed student leaders, and the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council.
Our LMC staff has also enjoyed helping students from Ms. Baker's class with projects, using green screens and TouchCast Studio to create realistic news broadcasts. It's been a great addition to the other classes that use the LMC for fun projects like Speed Book Dating & Ms. Vedder's speedy health research project.
For Black History Month, our center display showcased books by African American authors, inspired by the #ownvoices movement on Twitter. We're looking forward to putting together more #ownvoices collections in the future, especially as we continue to add diverse authors and viewpoints to our library.
Finally, our displays are featuring plenty of rainbows this month. The weather is getting warmer and is often a bit dreary, so it's fun to be surrounded by bright colors and fresh flowers inside! Ms. Wilson's new diffuser has also been a hit, as it fills the front of the library with peppermint & grapefruit to keep us all awake & energetic.
We're loving our library this year, and this week especially! It's homecoming here at Bayside, which means the whole school is celebrating. To enter the LMC, you have to go through the senior's classes fantastic balloon arch, which really brightens up the school's foyer.
Welcome back to school for our 2017-2018 school year!
This year, every single student will have their own school-issued laptop computer to use at school and at home, as the Digital Anchor project closes out its last phase! More teachers will be implementing "Flipped Learning" to help student differentiation and increased achievement!
Be on the lookout for Schoology, a new portfolio approach to keeping all student data and classroom information together in one tidy place!
As always, please feel free to ask your library staff about Digital Learning, Schoology, troubleshooting laptops issues, research questions, Destiny help finding that "just right" book, and more! We are eager to help you be the best you can be!
On Thursday, our book order finally arrived! The new selections are in the center display & are ready to be checked out! We've got a great mix of new books, including two books in braille. There are also fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction, & more. Even the professional library received some new additions!
Some of my favorites are the books by comedians. Modern Love, by Aziz Ansari, looks at how dating has changed as we look for love online & in other new ways. Mindy Kaling's books, Why Not Me & Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, are fun reads that touch on the issue of growing up different & explore her personal story.
We're celebrating national poetry month & encouraging you to come in and create your own poetry! We're keeping the forms of poetry simple, with magnetic poetry up around the library and blackout poems on our center display. Despite the apparent simplicity, the works you've created so far are interesting & expressive. Stop by to see what your fellow students have made and to make your own!
We also had poems available for Poem in Your Pocket Day! Students picked them up from the LMC and shared them with friends & classmates, and all staff members got poems in their mailboxes!
Our media center is back in action! We've got two new staff members joining us this school year.
Page Wiedeman, library media specialist, is returning to her hometown of Virginia Beach after working in media centers in Destin, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Hilton Head, South Carolina; and Birmingham, Alabama. She loves being outside, especially in the water, and enjoys paddle boarding in her free time. She's also a big fan of her Golden Retriever dog, Jordy. She graduated from First Colonial, attended James Madison University & Flagler College, and received her masters from the University of Alabama. Mrs. Wiedeman is excited to be at Bayside this year!
Becca Wilson, library media assistant, attended the University of New Haven and graduated from Princess Anne High School. She enjoys crafts & loves spending time with her cat, Memphis. She also has a wide variety of other pets, including two guinea pigs, three turtles, and three more cats. Ms. Wilson is also excited to join the Marlin family this year!
Mr. John Ingersoll is returning to the LMC as well.
Stop by and say hello to our staff, new & old!
